We all set goals, and we don't always meet them. But what if there was a better way of thinking about goals? Rise and Thrive: Empowered Goal Setting, aimed to help attendees achieve their goals by thinking about them in a new way.
The workshop was hosted by Brendan Hayes, NBDF’s senior director of education, and summer intern Devin Boyle and was packed with practical tips and hands-on activities designed to help participants make real progress in their lives.
The session kicked off with an icebreaker centered around the life balance wheel, a simple yet l tool that encourages people to take stock of different areas in their lives—from health to hobbies—and rate their satisfaction. This exercise helped everyone see where they were thriving and where there was room for growth, setting the stage for focused goal setting.
Next, Devin introduced the concept of SMART goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. This framework helps keep goals clear and realistic, making it easier to track progress and stay motivated. Brendan emphasized that having a concrete plan is key, especially when facing obstacles along the way. Rather than just wishing for change, visualizing the outcome and anticipating challenges can turn dreams into achievable steps.
Building on that, Brendan shared the idea of “loop goals,” which involves visualizing into the future. “What does it look like if you achieve your goal? How will your life be different?” She encouraged thinking beyond just the goal itself to include how to overcome potential hurdles. For example, training for a 5K race with a loved one involves not only the end goal but also scheduling runs, managing energy, and adapting to unexpected disruptions. Participants were encouraged to apply this mindset to their own goals, ensuring they were prepared for the twists and turns of real life.
The workshop gave everyone time to craft their own SMART goals and break them down into specific tasks. Brendan and Devin reminded the group to consider their daily schedules and to lean on accountability partners—friends or family members who can offer support, check in on progress, and celebrate milestones. Devin shared a personal story about how his mother’s encouragement helped him stay on track toward applying for grad school, highlighting how powerful a little outside motivation can be.
As the session wrapped up, Brendan and Devin underscored the importance of making goals personal and aligned with one’s values. They also shared resources for tracking health data, encouraging participants to stay informed and engaged with their progress. The group left with not only new insights but also a renewed sense of motivation and practical strategies.
Whether you’re setting goals big or small, the key takeaway is that clarity, planning, and a little accountability go a long way. So take a moment, check your own life balance wheel, and start turning your goals into reality—one smart step at a time.
